I agree with what you say, but I wasn't clear and we are making two different points. It's a matter of headroom. You are saying the headroom should always be positive. What I'm saying is that for background-music gigs, the headroom can be dramatically positive. Even a full-time pro quintet can do background-music gigs with the CB high-school books filling out their repertoire.

But they would be embarassed to play those same tunes in a recital situation.

Joe's point is here, too. The "gigging" quintet players, if they are real pros, expect to run through a rehearsal (maybe), and then show up to the gig and play the ink. But even most groups of that caliber will still work hard on their recital program, even though it should still be within their grasp.
