What you're referring to is the "Variations on Annie Laurie" that appeared on the first Hoffnung Festival recording (1956).

Unlike the BBBb tubas at Harvard and at Fischer, the whereabouts of the subcontrabass tuba that Hoffnung played at this concert are unknown. It was, at one time, located at Paxman. Another story is that it's in the possession of a circus in South Africa. AFAIK, the latter story is unconfirmed.

Supposedly, Gerard Hoffnung's widow, Anna, would like to know where the subcontrabass tuba is. She's not the only one!
