You're quite right, that one occurs all the time. Ab is a prefix and has somewhat the meaning of outwards and downwards, so Daempfer ab is to lay down the mute literally. Weg is usually English away, for example if you tell someone to go away in German it's "geh weg". This leads me to an even more complicated mute indication "Daempfer auf", put in the mute, with it's opposite which you've said, "Daempfer ab". An interesting thread would be Mahler's indications which are sometimes in very idiomatic German. John
