I think the term "chance" here may point to the fact that music and art of all kinds are purely subjective. For example, most auditions come down to a small handful of exceptionally talented players. Each one has played well enough to make the finals. What are the deciding factors at that point? It can be any number of things, many of which auditionees can have no way to anticipate: the type of tone quality that a committee may prefer, aggressive vs. conservative approaches, importance of rock solid production and consistency vs. importance of ability to interpret..even the clothes you are wearing (remember most finals are without a screen and this is part of the real world)or whether those tacos a committee member ate last night are still with him/her!

These are all factors that we cannot control (or as referred to here "chance" factors)...nor should we attempt to anticipate them. Guessing games usually only result in a player trying to play in a manner that is not natural.
