Best player that day = what the committe is looking for.

If Roger Bobo shows up and sounds like a giant bass trombone, and the committee members look at each other and say, "Hey, we're looking for a tuba player, not another bass trombone," then by default Mr. Bobo was not the best player that day.

If Mr. Bobo showed up and sounded like a big huge orchestral tuba, and the committe said "Hey, not only is he phenominal technically, but he sounds like a tuba! That's what we're looking for!" Then reason stands to suggest he was the best player that day.

Being anal about "your sound" and never changing to suit the organization that you are in excludes you from being the best player. The Portrait of an Artist cd features Mr. Jacobs with a variety of sounds, maybe that should be a clue to the rest of us?

In case I've completely muddled my intentions, I'm agreeing with Sean, but suggesting that maybe he and some of the other posters really don't disagree that much.
