I didn't hear Sean say the losers should "change the way they play." I heard him say they should show up to the next audition prepared to...play...better. If it was subtlety that made the difference, get enough better so that it won't be subtle next time.
I don't recall seeing where Sean said it would be easy, or even possible. I do think he said that without the hard work and the single-minded objective, it will for sure not be possible.
Of course, comparisons like these are really just kicking the dirt, because no auditions have five players like the ones you mention who all play at the height of their powers on that day.
