Don't one of the less popular transcriptions of "Pictures" use a Horn for the Bydlo melody?

If Mr. Howarth heard both versions, his decision for the horn to carry the melody may have been well justified due to the number of tuba players doing a lackluster job of the solo.

Also, as Carole points out, Ravel wrote this piece for a French Tuba in Ut. Much more closely pitched to Horn than a contrabass, especially in the context of a brass ensemble where the tuba is the nearly full time bass line player.

I wish that the tuba population would take a hint from Barry Bonds. It is ok to use a lighter bat and choke up a little bit. You don't have to swing a 2x4 to hit the ball out of the park. It is about technique and execution, not about bragging rights.

Therefore, IMO, play it on euph or let a trombone player play it on euph, unless the conductor says otherwise.
