In the report I heard, the astronomer described it as a pressure wave, which is, in fact, sound in the normal sense.

I'm just trying to imagine what sort of pressure wave it takes to make a molecule bounce off its neighbor a meter away (or more like a million meters or a million billion meters away because of the liklihood of missing most of them). More molecules in a given space means higher pressure, but a wave requires them to bounce off each other.
