I use a minidisc extensively for recording. There are many models that can be used.
As has already been stated, be sure you have one with a mic input. There is certainly no need to use a computer during recording. If you don't want to go through your computer (for listening), you can plug it into any amplifier that has inputs or simply listen through earphones.
