I have two of the slim Canon USB scanners and they work very well. Not fast, but good quality, and they are quite inexpensive at (for instance) BJ's where I bought mine for about $69. Don't know about OS X. I'm using Windows XP Pro. With that, I just plugged the scanner in and turned on the machine. Plug and pray worked fine on this one. You need a powered USB port for this, since the power for the scanner comes through the USB cable -- all DC, no AC power cord. One feature I like is the stand that comes with it. You clip the stand on and the scanner sits upright on it's side. You can put single sheets on and scan in that upright orientation, or pull the scanner out and set it down flat if you need to. BTW, my N670U will scan A4 size sheets, so you can get coverage on the larger sheets. I have not tried scanning into music software, so I can not comment on that.
