I'd also have to say that hearing Toby Hanks in the early 70's with the New York Brass Quintet was my first live inspirarional tuba moment. Actually, they were performing at SUNY Fredonia as part of a chamber music weekend. I went to the concert hall very early, during the dinner break, just to see if I could find Toby warming up someplace. Well, I ran up this back stairwell, through open the door and ran right into him. He was lost and trying to find the stage. He invited me to show him to the stage and listen to him warm up on his 184 - an evening I'll never forget!!
