Yes people win auditions and then make good livings playing cut tubas. I have reason to belive that the CSO york that Gene Pokorny favors (there are two) was a proto type that the York Factory cut from an exsisting BBb to the commissioned CC tuba that exsists today. If it sounds great and plays in tune buy it and be happy.
