I've always thought that convertable over-the-shoulder tubas or contras were a physical nightmare, whereas the superior balance and ergonomics of Sousaphones was far preferable. I've seen too many kids who have shoulder, neck, and back problems caused by carrying over-the-shoulder horns. Carrying 20J's, Kings or other big bell-front tubas is good if the right kind of strap or harness is used, and it's hard to beat the sound of a 20J on the field.
Admittedly, most Sousas can become toneless and blatty far too easily, but the 20K has fewer problems with that than most other horns.
