Same basic horn but 981 has the more open leadpipe suitable for symphonic playing. Basically this E flat is a viable alternative to a medium sized CC, and was developed as such. I had the pleasure of meeting John Fletcher at a reception once, and someone asked him about his 981, and he said that it was develped to have a breadth of tone like a CC tuba but to keep the flexibility of a E flat.
The 982 has the older leadpipe that Besson has long put on E flat tubas. Good all around and easy to play, but not as open as the 981. This is what I have on my Boosey and Hawkes tuba. Still a very nice playing horn. Both the 981 and 982s have a 19 inch bell. Also the 982s have rings for straps to support the horn while standing or marching.
