I do like the form-fit foam idea (they've done some version of that in ski boots for decades, to fit all those weird feet) ... but I still would suspend the bell in air, not in foam where it could be torqued by the weight of the tuba.

I don't know, Mary Ann. If the whole tuba's held immobile by form-fitting foam, how is any force going to be exerted on the bell rim? It seems to me that the bell gets clobbered when the rest of the tuba breaks loose from the case's hold and dissipates its energy into the collision between the bell and the side of the case.

When I think of suspending the bell, I think about the stresses brought to bear on the bell by the suspension--sort of like carrying the tuba around by its bell.

Maybe you could fill your case with lime Jell-o--it might be viscous enough to prevent any damage to the horn. Only half-joking here--there might be something in this.

How about an inflatable form-fitting air cushion for the horn?

Chuck (I'm no mechanical engineer, nor do I play one on TV).
