That is one of the goals: facility in all keys. I have done exactly what you are speaking of with good results. Another one that I like is the Clarke patterns, done very slowly, with the highest pitch in each group of four notes having a fermata. (This will having you holding in some weird places, but works quite well nonetheless.)

As is normal for this type of work, ascend by half steps (i.e.–play the whole scalar pattern in a given key, then move up.) I usually start in the key of G (which will take me up to high D) and try to ascend a full octave, usually succeeding well up to D (high A) and then having to work quite carefully beyond that point. I take many breaks and do descending Chicowicz (VC I, #2) down to pedal C at the end.
