I've played 4 or 5 of the new 601's, and while they all played well, I felt that Alex's 601 played better. Better intonation, sound, and centering. I don't know if all older Cerveny play this well and this particular tuba has had some custom work done. It has a smaller leadpipe than most 601's I've seen, and much of the lacquer is gone.
As for construction standards, I don't know. I would suppose that they are different, but I don't know how they would differ. Alot of the older Miraphones, Cervenys, and Alexanders seem to only improve with age and proper care. I don't know why.
