[my opinion] In "corps-style" bands, looks is 95% and if "form" doesn't overlap with "function", it is simply the job of the players to make it appear as if it does.
Of course bell-front baritones and sousaphones are the obvious ergonomic and acoustic choice, but they don't "look" cool.
