When the piece doesn't allow time to insert a normal mute, I've used a home-made mute that I can insert whilst playing. I consists of a fruit basket stuffed with foam and covered with black cloth. With some experimentation I got the desired sound, adjusted to any intonation changes, and the conductor was happy. If I'd needed to remove the mute quickly, I perhaps would have attached a 'retrieval' line, or inconspicuously tipped it out on the floor.
