I went ahead and did marching band all the way through your age. Even if the band were the kind that gives up on musicianship, I would have kept to my own standards and gotten the most out of it. Besides, if I were put in a position to teach a marching band, I'd want to learn firsthand how to do it, and also to know what I would do to make the experience better.
Everyone knows that it's a rare musician that gets to do whatever they want and still get paid reasonably well.
