Having a good scholarship can eliminate the need to work at walmart to pay the bills. Time to practice and energy are critical in the formative years of instrumental study. It is definitely easier to spread practice out during the day than trying to fit in an hour or two after a full day of classes, homework and work.

Even if you have the 2-4 hours needed to practice, do you have the energy after work? How about that secondary instrument which could take another hour of practice--bass, drums, piano, trombone?

In graduate school, an assistantship often means valuable teaching experience as well as a full ride. This type of experience is almost essential if you want to break into the university teaching scene.
