With the help of faculty at the University of Southern Mississippi, I am starting a brass band here in Hattiesburg. I was just curious as to what some of you may enjoy listening to. I'm trying to select some lit for our first concert. I want to compile a list of brass band originals that really work, epecially for a new ensemble. I have 100% confidence in the groups ability to handle most music placed in front of them since it seems that 1/3 to 1/2 of the group is faculty and the rest are graduate students and upperclassmen/good local area musicians.
One piece I have found in my research that I have fallen in love with is Variations on "The Shining River" for Brass Band arr. Frank Wright (I believe the compoer is Rubra.)
I was wondering what "not-so-common" (for lack of a better description) pieces you enjoyed.
