Scholarships have many points - but the main one is to pay the scholarship student to do a job that the college needs to have done.

Sometimes, this is obvious (football team). Sometimes it's a tad more subtle (orchestra violinist). Occasionally, it slips under most people's radar (good student - yes, that'a a job the college needs doing; the paying students are attracted by a decent cadre of smart peers).

In any event, if you are on scholarship, you have a job. Not terribly high paying, mind you - but also not terribly demanding. Scholarship students who perform their jobs poorly soon discover what a *real* job looks like.
