While in college, I performed the Vaughan Williams concerto on the first half of a program and (because they didnt want to bring someone else in for 14 notes) the New World on the second half. Being stressed about the concerto, I didn't think about the New world much in rehearsals- just played my 14 notes. But after playing the concerto and having that weight lifted- I was able to sit through the New World and listen to a wonderful piece played my a wonderful orchestra. It was the best seat in the house and i didnt have to buy a ticket. And I made the best sounds that I could on those 14 notes. It was great just sitting there surrounded by the music.
Long story short- its a great piece, tuba or not. Enjoy it.
