I really hope whomever ultimately takes the position can enjoy it.

Based on all the craziness surrounding this ordeal, it seems that, from a musical standpoint, it would be very difficult to enjoy the CSO principal trumpet position. EVERY note pregnant with such expectation. Pressure is one thing: we all hope we can respond when called upon. But the soap-opera like saga of the past couple of years just seems over the top. Other orchestras are able to hire prinipal players. Is Mr. Herseth's (well earned and justly deserved) legend contributing to the difficulty of finding someone? It seems that whomever takes the gig will need some rare sort of indifference to comparison and joy of playing -- even moreso than one would expect of a top-flight professional. There are plenty of music jobs I would love to try in a fantasy world. CSO principal trumpet just ain't one of them. Good luck and Job's patience to all those in contention.
