This also relates to elasticity. Buying an "all-purpose" tuba is far more elastic than a 6/4 howitzer. Mainly because of choice of selection and availability. However this drives the supply of 6/4 horns way down. Then the price skyrockets, because only a few people are committed to building these beasts.
It really is simple economics.
