Jon, a good many tuba excerpts are loud and bombastic. I think you are making a very wrong generalization of tuba players. Tuba players are often one of the brightest and most talented members of any group. We all do concentrate on being musicians, if not why would we bother practicing at all? If you payed any attention, brass players don't just play lousy arrangements. You must realize that brass instruments really haven't been utilized until the 20th century. It was not until almost this century that music was written for tuba. And often the tuba was used to reinforce the bass where a Double bass was not sufficient enough. And as for playing "real" parts, not until Mr. Harvey Phillips got involved the solo tuba was a figment of imagination. Therefore any "real" music such as Bach and Beethoven has to be arranged for the brass. Just remember to think before you leap. A good many musicians on this page will tear you limb from limb if you don't watch what you say.
