What you suggest is in fact exactly what I've been doing for as long as I've had the 983 (about 7 months) and it works after a fashion. But I have smallsh hands and would really like a more comfortable hand position. If I could bring that durned thumbring down about 3/4" and perhaps change its angle with respect to the valve cluster slighly, it'd be perfect.
It strikes me as odd that the fixed thumbring on my Miraphone 186 fits my hand nicely but that the "adjustable" thumbring feature on the 983 can't be adjusted to accomodate me.
