I was in the same place about six months ago, except had been away from the horn for about 30 years. My predicament (maybe as well as yours) was that I could hardly evaluate horns, as I could hardly play. I got help from a local music professor, and a repairman friend. A modest initial investment does seem appropriate as you likely won't be ready to really try horns for a couple of years? I feel like I ended up with a pretty nice instrument using the above approach, at least to get my chops back, and I may just keep it. But I will also go out and re-evaluate when I think the old lips are ready. Good luck!, from one now playing in a similar ensemble.
