Don't try self-diagnosis. There are LOTS of other criteria for TMJ, not just what you have described. See your Doc for evaluation. She/he can then refer you to a specialist who can help out. Don't let this one slide - it sounds like the problem is getting in the way of your ENJOYING playing. No matter whether you decide to go pro or not, you should always enjoy playing - you'll be a better player when you have fun!

On the career choice, my teacher (a pro) told me when I was in your position to (my appologies to those who have made a career out of playing, but I quote) "Get a degree in something real first. If you still want to play professionally after that, then go for it!" (Who knows ... that may have been his "nice" way of saying that I sucked ;^)

Look at the background of some pros & you might be surprised at what you find. I understand atht Charles Kavaleski (sorry about the misspelling), once principal horn of the BSO, has a Ph.D in Nuclear Chemistry.

Best of luck on your condition and your career choice!
