I'd only add one suggestion to Dave Zerkel's comments. Your scales, all of them, in all forms, need to be superb to make the cut.
In case you're wondering why military auditions seem to place such a premium on technical ability, it has to do with the job itself. Having been a U.S. Army Bandsman for 22 years, I've seen many situations where we didn't have the luxury of loads of rehearsal time to prepare for a commitment. Occasionally, I've had my music handed to me on the bus, on the way to the commitment. Since the pieces had to sound solid and musical on the first read-through, there was no room for technical problems. To this end, sight-reading and scales become even more important.
A career in military music is demanding, but the rewards are great.
