Matt,
Gold plating (on instruments) is accomplished over silver plating, and will have no acoustical drawbacks, although the jury is out on how much of an advantage it might offer. If it were my horn, I'd probably do it now if the horn is in like-new condition. Otherwise, I'd wait about 5 years or so, 'til it need refinishing, and just have it done then. FWIW, my 1935 York CC is being refinished now, in satin silver w/ bright silver trim, and gold bell interior. As for polishing, tarnish will eventually come through the microscopic pores in the gold plate. For anyone who encounters this, I've had great success using TarniShield and a very soft cloth. It will take the tarnish off and restore the appearance of the gold.
