I wrestle with a very mild form of dyslexia - enough of a pain that I (like another poster) can't sync. right & left hands while playing piano. My gratest difficulty is distinguishing notes below the bass cleff (a bummer when playing the tuba, as you know!).

First - tell the folks who say your student "can't compete" to go jump in a lake. He/she CAN be a great player AND overcome his/her difficulties! It may require more specialized practice/training than others, but they can do it.

A good music therapist (or therapist who is a musician) can help. Make sure the therapist knows the requirements of being a musician!

Also try alternat (wacky) solutions. By a fluke, I found that I read more accurately (both music and text) when the thing I'm reading is upside-down. I TRY to read right-side up, but when the going gets tough, I know that I have a back up plan. It also freaks out the trombonist who sits next to me!

Good luck - and pass along my (our) most sincere encouragement to your student!
