It seems to me that a cone on the bottom valve cap that inserted into a cone-shaped cavity in the bottom of the valve, less clearance required for a compressed spring, would center the spring on both ends irrespective of wear and deformation. It would even accommodate different spring diameters easily enough. There may indeed be problems with this approach, but it seems not like a problem that should be so difficult to solve, if some actual engineering went into its solution.
