You'll need more than a HB-50 or PT-6 as an orchestral musician. You'll definitely need an F tuba for certain works. If you have a 6/4 horn, you will likely also need a 4/4 CC for literature that falls between the BAT and the F.

I would recommend something other than a 6/4 tuba entering college. A large 4/4 tuba such as a MW 2000 would, I think, be perfect. It's big enough for orchestral playing (Ron Bishop uses one in the Cleveland Orchestra) but yet it's nimble enough to be great in quintets and other ensembles you'll deal with in college.
