I don't thaink I'd ever use the term 'proper.' I think of the brass quintets who's work I respect, Canadian, Empire, New Mexico, American, Atlantic, and NONE of their guys use BAT's. (American has ALWAYS used bass bone). My OPINION is that the 6/4 tuba is strictly large American orchestra phenomenon. In a chamber situation, that big, broad sound is out of place, even with a smaller mouthpiece. NO DOUBT fine players can make it sound great, but what's the point? Don't you want a big tuba in a big group and a small tuba in a small group? I have had great results with a 4/4 CC tuba in chamber settings, with an F tuba, or a bass bone on the Renaissance or high stuff. I leave the BAT at the symphony hall. But, we are all looking for a particular sound. If you and your group WANT that big broad 6/4 sound, then by all means GO FOR IT. Adressing the first time buyer, DON'T DO IT!
