well, I guess it depends on what you look for. It's really hard to compare the sound of a meinl and a king because they are so different. I happen to like the king sound better, and I think it's the most reponsive BBb I have ever played. I usually go for the rotary valve tuba, but in this case the king is my favorite. If you like the german rotary BBb sound better that the meaty roar of the king, then I can see why you like the meinl better. I personally find the meinl to be bland, and rather expensive.

As for the thickness of the metal, I haven't done a comparison between the two, but you should be talking about new instruments, not 15 year old horns. I have noticed that instruments seem to be getting thinner lately, and older horns seem to a little thinkre and tougher.
I played a meinl 25 in high school, and don't think the new horns are as good, both in construction, or in playablility.
