Yes this is an interesting question....why did Sibelius stop writing for the tuba soon after the 2nd symphony when he so obviously LOVED the instrument? Only a Finnish tuba player would know the complete answer but it's likely to be prosaic (so John Fletcher always said): the good player in the particular orchestra Sibelius knew was replaced by a bad player.....did the good player retire, move on, become ill, die? Someone must know.
