Not to jump on your back, Joe (you're one of my favorite posters here) but you say "fooling around with this type of exercise" as if it were a miracle weight-loss pill not approved by the FDA. I have made great strides in my playing which I attribute to buzzing frequently, both with and without resistance, and I encourage this practice without reservation. It's especially handy on business trips or vacations (what's that?) when you can't take the whole horn with you.
