Klaus,

I would never claim to understand the science of any of this. I also wouldn't bother to write about this unless I had had some personal experience involved in it. Like you, I'm only going by my experience. That experience has been that m.p.'s that have a more radical taper in the backbore (smaller throat bore, bigger back bore) have sounded "bright" for me. I've also had a couple of backbores opened up (back in the days when every jazz trumpeter that this was the answer to their prayers), and the results were that the m.p. ended up sounding brighter. But, that's with ME playing - maybe you get a different result for some other reason (?). Even the Schilke m.p. literture will tell you that this will make a m.p. sound a bit brighter.

Klaus, I don't think advising someone to be a bit cautious about boring their m.p. is such bad advice. I don't know, maybe it is (?).
