I entered this thread because I happened to disagree with your statement about the relations between open backbore and brightness of sound.
When, now, asked about the risks of modifying mouthpices I will say two things:
a: Do not work on mouthpieces you can not afford to replace.
b: I have yet to ruin my first backbore. In two cases I have had two specimens of certain mouthpiece models, a modified one and an unmodified one. I invariably have used the modified ones.
To found ones opinions on tuba mouthpieces on experiences with trumpet mouthpieces might be a less than happy idea.
For some reasons of probably historical nature the standard trumpet mouthpiece has a diproportionally long stem. A VB 2C of mine is 88 mm long. Should BBb tuba mouthpieces be of the same proportional length they should be 352 mm long. That is a bit over 13.8 inches. Has yet to be seen in real life.
Another potential reason for our diverging experiences is that you have started out with narrow throat bores. I started with large throat bores.
