Lee, I am happy to hear that advice. I have been telling students to guide their timing by what they are hearing come out of their bell, rather than what they are doing to make that sound, for years, and am glad to hear that somebody else believes the same thing.

I find that the issue of time with the tuba is critical. Where you place the beat, is very often dependant on the character of the music itself. On fast, rhythmic music you usually need to be playing in front of the beat, while in ballad-style music you can lay back a little. It is not so much a tuba issue, as it is a musical issue. (For a great example, listen to where the bass player is placing his beats on some of the "up" tunes that the Basie band does.)
