Right on! You're only the second person I've heard talk of being somewhere "in" the beat. The other one talked of jazz players (bass players) playing "on top" of the beat. When I was learning bluegrass fiddle, the very hardest part was figuring out how the beat was different from classical violin. I'm not sure I ever completely got it (and the playing on the flat side of the pitch, to boot.)

As for listening to what comes out the bell, that's the best description I've heard of the kind of listening that is needed for good ensemble skills. I'm going to print Lee's post and keep it for instructional purposes.
