The auction site picture looks butt-ugly. You can declare it and pay duty, or tell them (if they ask) "This is my old tuba."
The statement would technically be correct, and I doubt that any border patrolman would assume that anyone would bother to drive over to purchase such a thing.
Why not pay the duty? It surely wouldn't be too much.
