Far more tubas models of tubas that I've played with "normal" valves had much better response/low register/focus than the assortment of tubas with "big" valve tubas I've tried, but I don't believe that the "normal" valves contributed to these better playing characteristics at all.

How could more surface area between pistons and casings not dictate more potential friction? For instance, when Anderson Silver Plating rebuilds Conn "short-action" pistons for me (to their normal specifications - about .0005" all around) I can't send them out to customers that way. They are simply too slow. For "short-action" (super large) pistons to go up and down with acceptable speed, they must be made to fit with looser tolerances than "normal" pistons.
