I own a Mirafone 186 (new in the fall of 1995), and I have a close friend who played a St. Pete for about 2 years. Both instruments blow well, both have a rich, full tone, and both are useable in chamber music (e.g. brass quintet), brass band, concert band and orchestra -- each of us used his instrument in all four kinds of ensembles.

The biggest difference between the two is the quality of workmanship on the valves, and the result is that the valves are MUCH faster on the 186. In fact, it was after playing my 186 (and commenting that it had the fastest rotary valves he had ever seen on a tuba) that he made the decision to sell his St. Pete, replacing it with the Getzen CB50.

I had considered the St. Pete, but I'm very glad that I spent the extra $$ and went for the Mirafone.
