It is my understanding that Mr. Jacobs used them towards the end of his tenure with the CSO. They are very useful in situations where one must hold out a low note for a very long period of time at a very soft dynamic, such as works of the Russian composers. The false tones don't require as much air and therefore allow the notes to be held out longer. They are also sometimes easier to play extremely softly.

Another good use for them is to finger the low E 16th notes in the Ride with 2nd valve and use a false tone for it. On many horns it speaks easier this way. The degradation in the quality of the sound of that 16th note being played as a false tone is negligable.

They have several uses besides giving a Sousaphone an extended pedal register. If practiced and incorporated into one's toolbox of techniques, they can be used practically.
