I played in several US Army bands during the period 1959-1965.
It goes without saying that musical skills are essential. But
don't overlook what should be obvious. Before showing up for
the audition, be sure to shave, get a respectable haircut,
wear clean clothes, and shine your shoes. Watch your posture,
also. Let them know that you have the potential to be a
sharp-looking soldier.
We have all known some pretty shabby-looking tuba players that
appear to have just come out of a dense forest. That type
of individual will never get a job in a service band.
Best wishes this holiday season to all you fine musicians out
there.
