Although it is possible that the Conn you have is causing difficulties, it is most likely something which could be overcome with diligent practice. Playing on a different instrument, like the BBb mentioned, will introduce new stimuli, thus making it easier for the mind to form new procedures more easily. Cracking notes on your Conn are the results of incorrectly formed conditioned reflexes. You could switch mouthpieces, which may not be such a bad avenue to try, or switch horns. This will allow change more easily. This method can get pretty expensive though if you must purchase a new horn everytime a bad habit is to be replaced.

It would be better to go to the stimuli of musical thought to shake things up a bit and allow you to form new and better habits in slurs to replace what you dislike now.

I am not to say that a "better" horn won't make your life easier, just that if your present horn does not leak air and is in reasonable condition than it should not be the "most" improvable variable.
