My 2 bob's worth. I've heard a pro Orchestra Trom Tuba setion play Ryde of the Walkyries, the standard excerpt. With 4 troms (3 tenor and one bass) and Melton "Deck" CC horn. Sounded absolutely fantastic.

Then it was played immediately again, but with a Rudy 5/4 BBb horn. First thing, I could NOT hear the tuba. No matter how hard I listened. All I heard was this massive powerful sound. Then I realised that the BBb tuba melded with the troms and gave it so much depth.

I think it was Edward kleinhammer (Bas Trom Chicago Symph) who said he was disappointed when a student told him (after a concert) that he could hear every note he played. He was dissapointed because the "Chicago" sound is the BLEND of the sections, not him sticking out. This was my immediate thought after listening to the Ryde being played with the BBb horn. It was just magic! Pure unadulterated power. This is what made my decision to go for a BBb instrument over the CC.

That's my story, now you have to find out what your's is! :-)
